Is The Keto Diet A Good Option For You

The Keto Diet is a very popular choice right now among all age ranges for a variety of reasons. One might wonder if it’s a good option, however for your particular reason for wanting to change the way that you eat. Let’s take a look at some reasons that people use the Keto diet and why it may or may not be a good fit for you and your lifestyle.

What is it?

In simple terms Keto means that you are eating a low carb diet, typically higher in fat than most. (Healthy fats that is!) By doing this your body goes into a metabolic state called Ketosis, hence the name ‘keto’.

Reasons:

Weight loss, appetite control, healthier triglycerides, higher HDL ‘good’ cholesterol along with lower LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol, blood sugar control, and possible blood pressure control are some of the main reasons that people choose to use this diet as their focus in getting healthier.

What you can and can’t eat:

The number one consideration will come down to the food restrictions you will be following.

Vegetables, meat, eggs, fish and natural fats such as butter and olive oil are all welcomed.

Low carb eating means avoiding most processed foods, soda, most fruits, juice and foods high in starch like breads, pasta, rice, and potatoes. This does not mean not EVER eating them, but eating them in lower moderation, avoiding whenever possible, or for instances like bread, making a keto friendly version is acceptable.

Water, regular coffee, and regular tea are all acceptable, as well as red wine on occasion. This is meaning no additives to these drinks such as sugar and sugary flavorings.

Do you need to stick with it?

This is an answer that is entirely up to you, although it’s recommended to talk with your medical provider about the pros and cons. Keto is a good diet to restart your body, eat healthier, and start on a path of a healthier lifestyle, but may not be a good long term fit for most people. Avoiding carbs can have a negative effect on the body while choosing the correct carbs and eating in moderation is key to healthy eating.

Keep in mind if you are allergic or sensitive to any foods that might further limit what you can eat while on this diet and if it will have a large impact on the outcome.

As with any diet it’s always important to do your research and consult your physician. If you have any underlying conditions you will want to be sure that this diet will not negatively affect any condition, disease, symptoms or current medications that you might be taking.

Pros and Cons

Thankfully for the average person, this diet does not usually mean a higher grocery bill, one of the pros. Since you will be avoiding certain foods, but buying more of other healthier options, while avoiding processed foods, it typically just about evens out.

Another pro is that you will more than likely eat more veggies than you were before, which can only improve your health!

One con as with any diet or lifestyle change is that some people have a very difficult time making the switch to the diet and give up before seeing benefits. Stick with it, as it can take weeks to get into Ketosis.

For most eating keto and low carb is an easy change to make. It is great because it can fit into any lifestyle and easy to adapt so it can work for you.
